WORKING CONTEXT 
The National Animal Health Research Center (formerly Animal Health Research Division, AHRD), one of the centres under NASRI of NARC is mandated to research animal and poultry diseases. It is located at the altitude of 1135 masl with 85°10' E and 27°39'N in Khumaltar, Lalitpur district, Bagmati Province. The prevailing climatic condition is the sub-temperate type. The centre covers an area of 16 ropanis (0.813 hectares) with a three-storied laboratory building, a three-storied administrative building and a few animal sheds. 
This centre has been carrying out problem-based research in some of the nationally prioritized diseases and is also striving to establish and develop the infrastructure and manpower required to meet its long-term goal. Currently, zoonoses and diseases of public health importance are the focal points of the research. 
Besides research work, NAHRC provides services to farmers, government organizations, DLSO, NGOs/INGOs, universities, co-operatives and other stakeholders through diagnostics, training and consultations for health management.

INTRODUCTION 
Central Animal Disease Investigation and Research Laboratory was established on 25 Kartik 2045 under the leadership of Dr Upendra Mishra, BVSc, PhD (Virology). This was later merged with the NARC system, renamed as Animal Health Research Division (AHRD) which was again renamed as National Animal Health Research Center (NAHRC) in FY 2077/78 and mandated to carry out basic and applied research on various aspects of livestock and poultry diseases of economic and zoonotic significance. This centre, since then, has been carrying out problem-based research in some of the nationally prioritized diseases and is also striving to establish and develop the infrastructure and manpower required to meet its long-term goal. Towards this, additions of some building infrastructure and laboratory facilities are also taking place.
